first_imgStay on target “Her social media, strong. Her variety show segments, a hit. Nash Huang is at the top of her game. But when the iRis Shutter contact lens hits the market, Nash’s life is personally invaded. The latest leap forward in “technological progress,” these contacts not only play video or augment reality…but also record footage. Fighting to keep her life together after a leaked sex tape goes viral, a clingy super-fan is the last thing on Nash’s mind…but that’s exactly when the bodies pile up, and the terror begins.”NO. 1 WITH A BULLET(W): Jacob Semahn (A): Jorge Corona (C): Jen Hickman (L/D): Steve WandsBeing in the public eye can sometimes be hell. It can even be downright scary. I’ve personally had a couple of run-ins online that will make you feel a bit icky inside. It’s a reality for people, and they have to go through this on a daily basis. Semahn takes what a lot of people have to go through on a regular basis and creates a new world. A world where technology isn’t all that it seems and the experience of harassment and internet stalking is turned up a notch. No. 1 With A Bullet gives you the creeps, but grounds you in the reality that this stuff really does happen.via Image ComicsSemahn weaves a narrative that sits with you for awhile. It packs a lot in the first issue that, in reality, would be very overwhelming. However, Semahn lays down the foundation of the story so well that it leaves you aching for more. I found myself reading it once and going back to it again because this is, in a lot of ways, the reality we live in now. We’re so consumed by technology. How many likes we get, oversharing online and documenting every aspect that it becomes, in a way, apart from our identity.Semahn gives voice to a world that utterly consumes itself with technology. This world blurs the line between privacy and violation. Guided through the lens of our protagonist and latest cyber-victim, Nash Huang, we see how being in the public eye can create a downfall when your “superfan” compromises your most private of moments for the world to see. Semahn writes a story that’s terrifying. However, it’s so important to talk about and grounded in a look at the future if we don’t get some things under control.Jorge Corona’s art is distorted and sinister, which makes it the perfect companion to Semahn’s script. Corona’s art really sets you into that stalker type vibe. It doesn’t let up and pulls you along with it, dragging you into the frenzy and violation that Huang now has to face. In some panels, I found myself being uncomfortable. It felt like I was looking into a life that I wasn’t supposed to see. Which, is precisely the point and why it’s so brilliant! You find yourself doing double takes in each panel as if you’ve missed something that you just didn’t see and as if you were the guy following her around.via Image ComicsThe colors by Jen Hickman blend perfectly with Corona’s eerie art with a blast of neon-vibrant bliss that leaves you in awe. I’m a forever fan of colorists who can do Nicolas Winding Refn’s colors on the page because I love how confusing it makes you feel. Usually, neon colors make you feel somewhat okay, almost as if a good time is ahead. Hickman’s neon palettes blare out at you. They start to resonate like a siren that alarms you that someone is in danger.Lastly, Steve Wands’ lettering and design complete this comic in all the right ways. His placements guide you through the story with ease. It even points you out to things in the panels that you have to do double takes for. Along with the lettering, the design for the logos, text messages, social media boxes and more hit what the comic is going towards. They make it an even more rewarding, yet threatening headspace for the reader.No. 1 With A Bullet has got to be another #1 issue that leaves you be gasping. You’ll deep dive into this comic knowing that it can only go downhill from here, but hope everyone can find a way out before the bodies get out of hand.
