Expedition 59 Astronauts Safely Return to Earth After 204 Days in Space

first_img Three Expedition 59 astronauts safely returned to Earth after spending 204 days at the International Space Station (ISS).On June 24, NASA astronaut Anne McClain, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut David Saint-Jacques, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko touched down aboard a Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft, Space.com reported. The capsule, which was slowed by breaking thrusters and lowered by a parachute, landed in Kazakhstan at 10:47 p.m. EST, said a NASA press release.Welcome home @AstroAnnimal, @Astro_DavidS and Oleg Kononenko! During their stay at the ISS, the trio orbited Earth 3,264 times and traveled 86,430,555 miles.The Expedition 59 crew assisted with many biology, biotechnology, physical science, and Earth science experiments during their 204-day mission, including investigating small devices that replicate the function of human organs, recycling 3D-printed material, and editing DNA in space for the first time.Each crew member also had milestone spacewalks: McClain on her first space trip completed two spacewalks, while Saint-Jacques, who was also on his first mission, was the sixth Canadian astronaut to perform a spacewalk. Kononenko, who was on his fourth space mission, completed two spacewalks that totaled 13 hours and 46 minutes.
