first_img Tablets have been around long enough now that along with existing as a middle ground between phones and laptops, there are various subcategories within the product space as well. The line between high-end phones and small tablets is blurrier than ever, and the same goes for high-end tablets and modest laptops. But if you want something firmly in the center, check out the new iPad Air. And at $499 it’s neither the cheapest iPad you can get (that’s the plain old iPad) nor the most expensive (that’s an iPad Pro). The new iPad Air is in the middle between them. And that’s reflected in the specs. The iPad Air has the 9.7-inch screen of a 2018 iPad as well as support for the first (but not second) generation of the Apple Pencil smart stylus. However, it also features the much-improved A12 processor (think augmented reality) of other modern iOS devices along with support for Apple’s nifty physical connected keyboard some argue is superior to the current MacBook keyboard. These upgrades turn the tablet and its potential for real work into a modest little sibling to the iPad Pro. In fact, the iPad Air’s headphone jack gives it a leg up on that technically more powerful device. If you are confused by choices and aren’t entirely sure what tablet you think you’re supposed to get, chances are the new iPad Air will cover most of your big-screen iOS (or soon iPadOS) bases.
