Japanese manufacturer Bandai is releasing an all-color, new and improved version of the must-have toy of the ’90s in North America in July.Launched in 1996, the pocket-sized Tamagotchi was a fixture in playgrounds everywhere, but it really didn’t do anything more aside from eat, sleep, beep, and die — and serve as a fun accessory, maybe. The new Tamagotchi device — called Tamagotchi On — will feature millions of different characters, colored-digital screens, and cross-platform connectivity.“The new experiences and social connections raises the fun-factor and provides users with endless hours of entertainment,” Tara Badie, Bandai America Marketing Director, said in a press release. “We wanted to keep aspects of the original Tamagotchi gameplay but make it more relevant for today’s users by adding a colored-digital screen, new ways to connect and millions of different characters.”Available at mass retail nationwide starting July 28th, the new Tamagotchi On will come in two style: ‘Fairy’ and ‘Magic’. There will even be a “Daycare drop-off” feature allows users to leave their My Tama in good hands while they take some time off (and go to school).Pre-sales of the device actually started online on May 13 at Target, Amazon, GameStop and Urban Outfitters but the Tamagotchi On will be available at mass retail nationwide starting July 28. The new Tamagotchi On device will retail for $59.99.In Japan and other markets, Bandai has frequently released new Tamagotchi devices. But the new Tamagotchi On seems to be part of a new wave of nostalgic reinventions of iconic products and brands of the 1980s and 1990s.Just look no further than the recent live-action remake of Aladdin (in theaters now) and Sonic The Hedgehog (set for release in early 2020).Italy-based toy seller Alessio Di Marco told BBC News he’s seen a “strong rise in interest in toys from the 1990s” like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers  in the last few years.“The children of the 1990s have grown up and are increasingly nostalgic for the toys of their childhood,” he told BBC.You can pre-order Tamagotchi On on Amazon.More on Geek.com:The Dream of the ’90s Is Alive in Nike’s KD12Namco Museum Mini Player Is a Retro Arcade That’s Just RightVideo Game Movies Are Mostly Bad But ‘Double Dragon’ Is a Good Timelast_img
