Japanese manufacturer Bandai is releasing an all-color, new and improved version of the must-have toy of the ’90s in North America in July.Launched in 1996, the pocket-sized Tamagotchi was a fixture in playgrounds everywhere, but it really didn’t do anything more aside from eat, sleep, beep, and die — and serve as a fun accessory, maybe.The new Tamagotchi device — called Tamagotchi On — will feature millions of different characters, colored-digital screens, and cross-platform connectivity.“The new experiences and social connections raises the fun-factor and provides users with endless hours of entertainment,” Tara Badie, Bandai America Marketing Director, said in a press release. “We wanted to keep aspects of the original Tamagotchi gameplay but make it more relevant for today’s users by adding a colored-digital screen, new ways to connect and millions of different characters.”Available at mass retail nationwide starting July 28th, the new Tamagotchi On will come in two style: ‘Fairy’ and ‘Magic’. (Photo Credit: CNW Group/Bandai America)Users will now be able to connect their Tamagotchi to an interactive app on mobile devices to see more unique characters, play a game, meet new Tamagotchi characters to marry, and earn ‘Gotchi’ points and other surprises. There will even be a “Daycare drop-off” feature allows users to leave their My Tama in good hands while they take some time off (and go to school).Pre-sales of the device actually started online on May 13 at Target, Amazon, GameStop and Urban Outfitters but the Tamagotchi On will be available at mass retail nationwide starting July 28. The new Tamagotchi On device will retail for $59.99.In Japan and other markets, Bandai has frequently released new Tamagotchi devices.
