GAA NEWS: MILFORD EARN VITAL POINT AGAINST NEIGHBOURS DOWNINGS

first_imgMilford GAA News: *Donegal v Tyrone*Good luck to the Donegal Senior and Minor teams this weekend in their Ulster Championship openers against Tyrone. Especially the best of luck to our own Kane Barrett who will be featuring for the Minor game. Senior game throws in at 4pm with the Minors at 2pm. Best of luck to all involved.*Donegal Senior Ladies*Hard luck to Amber Barrett and the Donegal Senior Ladies who were defeated by Armagh in the Division 2 Final on Saturday. Donegal finished top of the table after a superb season and should hold their heads high after doing the county proud. Amber and the Ladies will be back in Championship action later in the year. *Seniors*CLG BnaG 2-7 Downings 0-13The Seniors drew with neighbours Downings this evening despite producing one of the worst performances of recent times! Conditions were difficult but Na Galloglaigh kicked away an awful of possession today but in fairness never gave in and dug deep to drag themselves back into the game. It was a depleted Senior team today with Gary Merritt, Paddy Peoples and Gavin Grier injured, Luc O Bairead suspended, Kane Barrett barred from playing due to playing for the Donegal Minors next week, and Kieran Mc Laughlin and Kieran Sheridan also missing from last week. Downings got the scoreboard ticking over first and put ferocious pressure on the defence any time they tried to play the ball out of their 45 and turned the lads over numerous times. Shaun Gallagher produced 2 fine saves from Downings goal chances, which had they gone in you’d have thought the lads were dead and buried after 15 minutes. Somehow the lads found themselves only a point down before a great goal from Cathal Mc Gettigan put the boys 2 clear, but this was to be the only time Na Galloglaigh led until the 58th minute. When referee Paddy McKeever blew the half time whistle with the score 1-3 to 0-7 the lads knew they were fortunate to be only one down, but they would have to raise their game significantly in the second half. And that they did. The second was an improvement and almost instantly Darragh Black was denied a goal by a good block. A McGettigan free brought the sides level but shortly after 3 points in a row from a hungry looking Downings team put them in a commanding position in a tough game. Pauric Curley and McGettigan got more points either side of Downings score to keep the lads in contention. With a great atmosphere at the game the boys started to come more and more into it and fought for every single ball. Just when the boys started to get on top they had 4 wides in a row in a 5 minute spell from the 45th to 50th minute and other teams may have let the heads drop then, but our boys kept plugging away and never gave up. With 3 points in it and 4 minutes left on the clock the boys got their just reward when Christopher Barrett poked home from close range to bring the boys level against a tiring Downings side who looked unable to keep up the intensity they had shown in the first three quarters of the match. Two minutes later Chippy got a point from play and it looked like the boys were going to get out of jail with 2 points off the noisy neighbours. However, shortly after Downings scored a monster point to level it up the referee blew the final whistle after 63 minutes. a great battling display from our lads who know that they are capable of much much better than they showed today and still almost won. Had the game been a few minutes longer you would have fancied the boys to take both points, but at the end of the day they will be happy enough with the draw considering. The boys have no game next week due to the Donegal v Tyrone match. JTeam: Shaun Gallagher, Conor McNulty, Sean Black, Paul Grier, Brandon Toye, Enda McHugh, Tj Evesson, Jonny Logue, Joey Cullen, Kyle Black, Christopher Barrett (1-1), Darragh Black, Pauric Curley (0-1), Cathal McGettigan (1-5), Dylan Hegarty. Subs: Kieran Gorman for Grier (HT), Adam Serrinha for K. Black (45m), Dean Burgess for McNulty (48m), Caolan Mc Gettigan*Reserves*CLG BnaG 1-10 Downings 1-6The Reserves continue their unbeaten start to the season with a good win over Downings in a local derby. A superb Caolan Mc Gettigan pass found Caolan Bolton who set up Ciaran McHugh for the opening score, but a very soft goal for Downings afterwards put some early pressure on given the playing conditions. Despite the early setback the boys responded well with points from McGettigan, Bolton, Adam Serrinha, Anthony Fisher and Emmet Conaghan to leave the half time score 0-6 to 1-2. Two minutes into the second half the lads stretched their lead when marauding full back Dean Burgess popped up on the Downings 45 and after a great run his effort trickled over the goal line. The second half was a battle in tough conditions and Downings got a few breaks, firstly a ‘phantom point’ when an effort that went off the post and wide was declared a point, and shortly after when they were awarded a soft penalty. Gavin McFadden prodcued a superb save from the spot kick after 51 minutes, which if it was scored would have just 1 between the sides. Hugh Mc Menamin, Bolton, and McGettigan got second half points before McFadden produced another great save in injury time to leave the full time score 1-10 to 1-6. Team: Gavin McFadden, Tony McGettigan, Dean Burgess (1-0), Dean Boyce, Jamie Heena, Ryan Ferry, Odhrán Coll, Kieran Gorman, Anthony Fisher (0-1), Caolan McGettigan (0-3), Caolan Bolton (0-2), Emmet Conaghan (0-1), Adam Serrinha (0-1), Ciaran McHugh (0-1), Hugh McMenamin (0-1). James Whelan for Serrinha (HT), Cormac Toland for Conaghan (40m), Connor Meakin for Boyce (45m)*U16s*BnG 1-9 Sean Mac Cumhaill’s 3-7Our u16’s impressive league run came to an end on Monday night as they were defeated by Mac Cumhaills in Killygordon. Things started of badly for the Moyle men as they lost Conor McHugh in the opening 5 minutes due to injury. Aided by a strong breeze in the first half the lads struggled to get going, conceding three sloppy goals however scores from Connor Gormley, Ryan Mc Mahon, Ronan and Oisin Doherty kept them in touch at half time trailing 3-3 to 0-7. Na nGalloglach started the second half much brighter despite the breeze being in the opponent’s favour, with Mac Cumhaills opting for long high balls into their forwards the backline coped well with Oisin Doherty and Andreas Afxentious quashing any aerial threat. The Twin Towns club couldn’t deal with Milford’s runners with Shane McNamee, Niall Trearty, Ryan Toye and the impressive Conor Coll causing them all sorts of problems however failure to take their chances in the final third proved costly. Despite having the wind in their favour MacCumhaills opted to pack their defence, but continuous pressure earned the Blues a penalty that Gormley coolly converted to bring the sides within three points. Na nGalloglach pushed for further scores with Trearty and Gormley knocking over However Mac Cumhaills added another two points of their own to win the game by four and secure a place in the Northern Final. Final Score Mac Cumhaills 3-7 Baile na nGalloglach 1-9.  The lads will feel aggrieved by the way the lost this game, had they taken their chances they would have ran out comfortable winners and will take comfort in knowing that they can compete with the stronger teams in the Division as they now look towards the Championship in a few weeks time. Team: Dane Dunworth, Conor Coll, Andreas Afxentiou, Niall Ferry, Peter Curran, Ronan Docherty, Ryan Toye, Ryan McMahon, Connor Gormley, Conor McHugh, Ryan Flood, Niall Trearty, Jamie Lee Blaney, Shane McNamee, Oisin Doherty.
